My Personal Experience with Six Star Whey Protein Powder:

Taste Test (6.1)

I tried both the vanilla and chocolate flavors, mixing each with 8 ounces of water, per the instructions.

Vanilla was interesting — it wasn’t quite what I expected. I could taste the artificial flavors and fillers, which meant it didn’t have the pure and clean flavor I was hoping for. It was good, but it wasn’t great. I scored it a 6.2 out of 10.

The chocolate flavor was similar. I was hoping it would surprise me, but it also tasted somewhat artificial. I gave it a 6 out of 10.

Overall, both flavors fell short of my expectations, with the artificial taste being a significant drawback. While the taste was still tolerable, it was subpar compared to other protein powders I’ve tried.

Bang for your buck (10)

At a price point of around $20 for an 18-serving container, Six Star Whey Protein is definitely one of the more affordable whey proteins on the market. You’re getting 30 grams of protein per scoop for just over a dollar, which is a great deal. Plus, Six Star often has sales where you can save a few dollars, lowering the price per serving.

However, it’s important to remember that with a lower price tag, you might be sacrificing a bit on quality. As I mentioned earlier, Six Star Whey Protein does contain artificial ingredients that I typically try to avoid in my own diet and when recommending supplements to my clients.

Considering both the cost and the nutritional value, I gave Six Star Whey Protein a 6.8 in the cost category. It’s a solid option if you’re on a tight budget, but what you’re saving in cost you’re likely sacrificing in quality.

Nutritional value (5.9)

There are some positives to Six Star’s nutritional profile, but it also falls short in a few areas. On the plus side, it packs 30 grams of protein per serving, which is a decent amount if you’re looking to boost your protein intake. It’s also low in sugar, with only 2 grams per serving.

However, the ingredient list is where I have some concerns. Six Star Whey Protein contains a fair amount of fillers and artificial ingredients, which is not something I usually recommend or consume myself. While it does include some added vitamins and minerals like vitamin C (90mg) and zinc (11mg), the amounts aren’t substantial enough to be a significant selling point for me.

That said, I scored the nutritional value of Six Star Whey Protein a 5.9 out of 10. It doesn’t quite meet my standards for a high-quality, nutrient-dense protein powder.

As always, I encourage you to review the ingredient list carefully and consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating any new supplement into your diet, especially if you have any pre-existing health concerns or allergies.

Mixability (6.3)

Regarding mixability, Six Star fell a bit short of my expectations. It was thicker that I expected, even after 15-20 seconds of shaking. The vanilla flavor, in particular, had some noticeable foaming and a slightly grainy texture as I drank it.

The chocolate flavor fared slightly better. I had to shake it for a bit longer to get a more even consistency, but it still wasn’t perfect or as smooth as I would have liked.

Overall, I scored the mixability a 6.3 out of 10. I like my protein shakes smooth and light. But if you don’t mind a thicker texture, you may be just fine with its mixability.

• Concerns about the ingredient list, including the presence of artificial sweeteners like acesulfame potassium, high fructose corn syrup, and excessive amounts of calcium and iron, which may cause digestive issues for some users.

Six Star Whey vs The Market: How Does it Compare?

As you can see in the below table, I rated Six Star lower than most other whey proteins. This is mostly because of the taste. Per our testing criteria, taste carries the most weight. So despite a solid protein density and bang for your buck score, Six Star still scores lower comparatively. That said, taste is subjective, so you might feel different.

If you’re on a tight budget and looking to up your protein intake, Six Star Whey Protein is a decent option. At under $20 for 18 servings, with 30 grams of protein per scoop, it provides a good bang for your buck.

However, the lower price comes with some trade-offs. The taste and mixability of both vanilla and chocolate flavors were subpar, and the ingredient list contains fillers and artificial components I usually avoid.

If cost is your main concern and you’re not too picky about taste or ingredients, Six Star Whey Protein is worth a try. Otherwise, if you’re happy to pay a premium for higher quality ingredients and a better protein to calories ratio, check out some of the other options I’ve listed above.
